In this webinar, palliative care specialist, Dr Salina Iupati, and social worker, Jeanette McLaughlin, will provide a general overview of palliative care and hospice services in Aotearoa, with a particular focus on community-based care. The talk will also cover the timing and reasons for referral to hospices, an introduction to advance care planning, and a look at what social support services are available in the community.
Dr Salina Iupati
Salina is a palliative care specialist at Te Omanga Hospice, Lower Hutt where she provides care to patients with terminal illness. Before that, she was a GP for 10 years. Salina is a PhD candidate at the University of Otago researching a future model of community specialist palliative care in Aotearoa. Salina is a current member on the training committee of Royal Australasian College of Physician for palliative medicine and a committee member of Palliative Care Aotearoa Research Network.
Jeanette McLaughlin
Jeanette is a Palliative Care Social Worker at Te Omanga Hospice. Jeanette has worked in Palliative care for 10 years and has expertise in the delivery of excellent palliative care to patients and whanau. She is also the Bereavement Coordinator at Te Omanga Hospice and provides support to bereaved whanau and friends.
Jeanette’s previous roles include Oncology Social Worker at CCDHB, Health Advocacy – supporting patient rights under the Health and Disability Code, and Social Worker for children in care in the UK. Jeanette has an Applied Master of Social Work.
