Founder of Brain Tumour Support NZ

A Pillar of Brain Tumour Support NZ Retires from the Board

After years of dedicated service and unwavering commitment to the cause, our founder and inaugural chair, Mandy Bathan, bade farewell to her role on the board of Brain Tumour Support NZ in January 2024. Her departure marks the end of an era, leaving behind a profound impact and a legacy of compassion, advocacy, and tireless support for New Zealanders affected by brain tumours.

Driven by her own experiences navigating the challenges of a brain tumour diagnosis, Mandy's journey with BTSNZ began in 2017 as a personal one. While recovering from her surgery, Mandy was shocked at the lack of information and support and decided that New Zealand needs to do better in helping those diagnosed with brain tumours.

Armed with only her laptop and phone, and with no previous experience of setting up a charity, Mandy set about attracting funds and putting together a team of like-minded individuals. With her courage and commitment in the face of adversity, she led the charge in creating the nucleus of our charity - BTSNZ was born!

Mandy was determined to give back and make a difference in the lives of others facing similar battles to her own. She was actively involved in the early days of the organisation - counselling patients, answering the phone, replying to emails. She found solace, guidance, and a sense of community within BTSNZ.

Throughout her tenure on the board, Mandy has been fabulously instrumental in shaping BTSNZ's mission, advocacy initiatives, support programmes, and outreach efforts. Her strategic vision and unwavering dedication have propelled the organisation forward, expanding its reach and impact across New Zealand. From raising awareness to advocating for better treatment options and support services, Mandy has been a fierce champion for the brain tumour community.

Beyond her professional contributions, Mandy's compassionate spirit and empathetic nature have touched the lives of countless individuals and families grappling with the realities of a brain tumour diagnosis. She has been a source of comfort, encouragement, and hope, offering a shoulder to lean on and a voice of reassurance during times of uncertainty.

As Mandy embarks on the next chapter of her journey, her presence and influence within BTSNZ will be deeply missed. However, her legacy will endure, serving as a beacon of inspiration for current and future generations of advocates and supporters. Her passion, resilience, and unwavering commitment to making a difference serve as a reminder that even in the face of adversity, compassion and community can prevail.

On behalf of the New Zealand brain tumour community and the countless lives she has touched, BTSNZ extends our heartfelt gratitude to Mandy for her extraordinary contributions and wish her all the best in her future endeavours. Though she may be stepping down from her official role, her impact will continue to resonate within BTSNZ and the broader community for years to come.
