Miniwalk Northland a Roaring Success
On Saturday 26 September 2020, Kate Coatsworth and her team hit Whangarei for Miniwalk Northland, the first of six sponsored miniwalks scheduled on the Beating The Track For Brain Cancer campaign.
The route for the miniwalk was the Hatea Loop, a picturesque 4.2km walk around the Whangarei Town Basin. Whangarei put on magnificent weather and the walkers, many looking resplendent in their Brain Tumour Support NZ T-shirts, drew lots of attention from the locals. Kate’s team did a great job of raising awareness of brain tumours and lots of money was raised for Brain Tumour Support NZ.
Whangarei mayor, Sheryl Mai, and Brain Tumour Support NZ trustee, Gavin Starling, were among the participants and both addressed the crowd before the start of the walk. However it was Kate’s speech describing her personal story and the motivation behind her campaign which reminded everyone of the important reason why they were here. A big thanks also to Lily Leathem and Pak’N Save Whangarei for supplying goodie bags for each of the walkers.
Some photos of the day can be viewed here.
Miniwalk Northland was the first of six sponsored miniwalks on the Beating The Track For Brain Cancer schedule. The miniwalks offer the chance for members of the public to join in and walk alongside Kate as she completes her mission to traverse the length of New Zealand from top to bottom. The next sponsored miniwalk is Miniwalk Auckland on Saturday 10 October. More information about this event here.
Kate’s story and her visit to Whangarei was also covered in depth by an article in the Northern Advocate.
