200th Brain Box Sent
This week the 200th Brain Box was sent out to a Kiwi brain tumour patient. This represents a major milestone for the Brain Tumour Support NZ team, which launched the Brain Box programme just 15 months ago.
The Brain Box is a care and information package which BTSNZ sends free of charge to newly diagnosed brain tumour patients and carers. Included in each Box is a printed set of seven BTSNZ Patient Guides which contain important information about brain tumour care, treatment and management. Also inside the Box is a range of New Zealand made products from local artisans and businesses to provide relief and relaxation, such as wheat packs, essential oils and rubs.
“We have even included a pack of tea and biscuits so that people can enjoy a nice, relaxing cuppa while they read through all the medical information,” said Chris Tse, Brain Tumour Support NZ chair.
“The Brain Boxes have been lovingly put together by our support team with the patient and their loved ones firmly in mind. There is nothing scarier than learning you have been diagnosed with a brain tumour. While the Brain Box contains essential information and goodies, it is also sending a message that there is a charity with a team of people here to support you throughout your brain tumour journey,” Chris explained.
The first ever Brain Box was dispatched to a brain tumour patient in Nelson in July 2020 under a pilot programme funded by the Rata Foundation. Since then Brain Boxes have been sent as far north as Kaitaia and as far south as Gore.
Each Brain Box costs around $100 to assemble and post, but BTSNZ are determined to keep the packages free for patients and families. “We have been able to keep the programme free thanks to generous donations from our supporters and fundraisers,” said Chris.
The response to the Brain Boxes has been both heart warming and humbling for the BTSNZ Team. “Every time we receive feedback it motivates the team to work harder to provide the care and support that our patients and their loved ones desperately need,” said Chris.
